BRAMPTON, ON – Good neighbours help build strong, connected communities. As Brampton residents spend more time outdoors this summer, the City is reminding everyone to be respectful of their surroundings by keeping noise levels down and being responsible pet owners.

Excessive or disruptive noise can affect the well-being of those around you. Whether it is loud music, prolonged construction, car alarms or persistent dog barking, Brampton’s Noise and Public Nuisance By-laws are in place to protect the peace and comfort of neighbourhoods across the city.

Noise and Public Nuisance By-law Reminders

These By-laws restrict loud or unnecessary noise that disturbs others, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours. Residents are reminded:

  • The operation of heavy equipment, machinery or tools used in construction, drilling or demolition is not permitted between 9 pm and 7 am, except until 9 am on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays.
  • Power devices, such as lawnmowers, grass trimmers, drills, sanders, grinders or similar devices, are also not permitted for use outdoors within a residential area between 9 pm to 7 am, except until 9 am on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays.
  • Vehicle mufflers or other devices which emit loud, explosive or unreasonable noises, including modified mufflers or exhaust systems, are prohibited. Vehicles cannot operate on a roadway if the exhaust outlet exceeds 92 decibels A (dBA) while the engine is idling. That is equivalent to the sounds of a hair dryer.
  • Excessive and unnecessary motor vehicle noise, such as sounding horns, revving engines or squealing tires, is also not allowed.
  • Residents should avoid repairing, rebuilding, modifying or testing any motor vehicle, motorboat, outboard motor or recreational vehicle outdoors within a residential area between 9 pm and 7 am, except until 9 am on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays.
  • When hosting a social event, avoid playing loud music, especially during late hours.

Violations may result in fines. For more information, visit brampton.ca/bylaws.

Reminders for Responsible Pet Ownership

The City of Brampton also reminds pet owners being a good neighbour includes managing barking and keeping dogs under control.

Preventing Excessive Barking

Dogs may bark for many reasons, including boredom, anxiety or territorial behaviour. While barking is natural, continuous or loud barking can disrupt nearby households. Excessive barking is disruptive to residents and is a violation of the noise by-law. To help reduce barking:

  • Make sure your dog gets enough exercise and playtime.
  • Avoid leaving pets unattended for long periods, especially outdoors.
  • Use positive reinforcement techniques to train calm behaviour.

Further, while it’s natural to want to interact with dogs in your community, it is important to respect their space and understand dog etiquette. Brampton Animal Services is offering tips for understanding how to safely interact with a dog.

Tips for interacting with dogs

  • Understand and listen to a dog's body language. Dogs often express how they are feeling through their body language so it is important that you take time to learn it.
  • Always ask the owner before petting a dog and respect their decision. There may be many reasons why the human may say no: the dog may not be comfortable/have anxiety, the dog may be training or working (service dog), the dog may not be friendly, the dog may have never been around children, etc.
  • Stay calm and be gentle. Treat the dog with respect and care.
  • Consider obedience training for you and your dog.
