BRAMPTON, ON – The City of Brampton is taking a proactive, community-first approach to fire prevention with its Home Safe Home campaign. Through to August 31, 2025, the campaign is helping protect Brampton neighbourhoods with fire and CO safety education delivered through direct outreach and in-home visits.
A key part of the initiative is a home inspection program that focuses on single-family dwellings. Over the past three years, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) has collected inspection data to identify trends, address areas of concern and guide campaign outreach. This evidence-based approach allows the City to deliver targeted education and reinforce compliance with smoke and CO alarm requirements.
In addition to inspections, Brampton fire trucks regularly visit neighbourhoods as part of the campaign. These visits help increase visibility, connect firefighters directly with residents and provide on-the-spot safety guidance. Educational materials, conversations and community engagement all play a role in raising awareness and promoting life-saving practices.
Safety tips
Fire and carbon monoxide safety begins with small steps at home. Here are important tips every Brampton resident should follow:
- Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. This is the law in Ontario.
- Install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms outside sleeping areas. CO is colourless, odourless, tasteless and potentially fatal.
- Test your alarms every month by pressing the test button.
- Replace the batteries at least once a year, or sooner if the low-battery alert sounds.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Check the manufacturer’s label for the expiry date.
- Create a home escape plan and practice it with your household.
- Keep exits and hallways clear to allow quick evacuation during an emergency.
- Never leave cooking unattended. Kitchen fires are one of the top causes of house fires.
- If your alarm chirps or malfunctions, replace or service it immediately.
The Home Safe Home campaign reflects the City’s commitment to helping residents stay safe, informed and prepared. By combining education, enforcement and community connection, Brampton is working to reduce risks and make every home a safe home.
