Getting Started

We understand that grant writing is hard work and organizations need to gather a lot of information before getting started. Below are a few quick tips to keep you on track.

Note: if you are looking to apply for specialized funding with the Brampton Entrepreneur Centre or Heritage Property Incentive Grant, please visit those pages individually for further information.  The below application portal is applicable to the Advance Brampton Fund streams, Marquee Festivals and Events, and the Sport Tourism Hosting Program.

Attend an in-person information session to get your application questions answered by one of our Grant Coordinators.

Learn the Basics

Before applying, review the basics. It's really important to remember who you are making this project for - who is your target audience and why do they need this offering?

Be certain that your project is something you really want to produce, that you have the means to produce it without a grant, and that you understand your responsibilities to the City if you're successful.

Learn more about what we fund, eligibility, and deadlines of each stream prior to beginning your grant. This information is located on each granting stream's webpage and within each guidelines book.

Skill Building

Attend one of our workshops to help you hone your application-writing skills, led by The Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson UniversityMany workshops require registration so start early to determine which skills you're looking to brush up on.

Additionally, visit our External Resources section for non-profit basics, continued learning, and more.

Understand Your Responsibilities

Read through the documents online before calling or emailing. Basic questions such as the open/closing date and how to apply will be made available online, while more complex processes are available in the individual Stream Guidelines documents and the Advance Brampton Fund Handbook. If you have an accessibility request, please contact 311 and we will be happy to accommodate.

Plan Your Application

Register in Advance

It's important that you don't leave registering in the application portal to the last minute. Although access is immediate for eligible organizations, if you are not deemed eligible and need to speak to a Grant Coordinator, responses may take up to two business days.

Creating applications at the last minute is not advised as it is a complex process and requires time for reflection as well as the permission for your organization to apply. If you have an accessibility request, please contact 311 and we will be happy to accommodate.

Final Details

Ensure your application meets the requirements, policies and eligible costs associated with the Stream you are applying for.

Ensure your application is complete. Answer every question and submit all requested attachments before applying. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline - saving your application does not submit your application to the City.

We do not accept late applications. Please submit your application by 11:59pm ET on the deadline date.

We do not fund retroactively. Your project must start after the grant deadline. Projects occurring between January 20, 2020 and December 31, 2020 are eligible for consideration. Please note that funding is not approved until Council ratification which can take up to four months following the submission of your application.

Ready to Apply?

What happens after I apply?

Once your eligibility has been approved, you'll be ready to apply to your applicable granting stream. Each stream is open for a different period of time, so be sure to closely check the dates and deadlines associated with the one you want to apply to. Once a granting stream has closed, you will no longer be able to submit an application or be considered for funding for that granting cycle.

Assessment

Once you apply for your grant, the application period closes, and the applications are assessed by an evaluation panel comprised of City staff and external stakeholders with subject matter expertise.  Please note that while your application is being assessed, you are not permitted to delegate to Council in regards to the project that you have applied for.

Notification

Once the assessment period is completed, the recommended grant recipients are provided to Council for review and ratification (approval).  Once Council has approved the recommendations, all applicants are notified whether they are successful or not. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee that you will receive funding. If you are unsuccessful, you may request feedback on your application via email.

Signing your Contract

Organizations whose applications are successful will be required to enter into a legal agreement with the City. By entering into an agreement with the City, your organization also must report on both the use of the money and the outcomes of the project.

Reporting

All successful applicants are required to report within 60 days of their project close date. Organizations that do not report within 60 days following their project may be asked to pay back the grant and may be ineligible from applying for the grants with the City of Brampton in the future.

Our Commitment

In extending the City's services, we're evaluating projects based on how they align with Councils 2018-2022 Priorities. Council Priority alignment will become available in the Advance Brampton Fund Handbook upon opening of the program.

The Advance Brampton Fund is committed to moving grantees towards project sustainability and strengthened ability to partner, collaborate and lead well-managed and meaningful work within the local non-profit sector and Brampton community. Thank you to all that apply!
