City to issue marriage licences on an urgent or compassionate basis beginning June 15

BRAMPTON, ON (June 10, 2020) – On Monday, June 15, the City of Brampton will begin to issue marriage licences by appointment on an urgent or compassionate basis. Due to the closure of City facilities since March 16, the City had temporarily stopped issuing marriage licences to protect the health and safety of staff and residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marriage licence applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and applicants will be screened according to urgent or compassionate requirements prior to receiving a licence. The City will prioritize wedding ceremonies set to take place before the end of July 2020.

Applicants are asked to send requests for a marriage licence by email at marriage.licence@brampton.ca. Beginning June 15, requests will be vetted through an online application process and, once approved, the City will schedule an appointment with applicants who are determined to require a marriage licence on an urgent or compassionate basis. Visit www.brampton.ca for a marriage licence application and for more information on these changes.

The health and safety of residents and staff is a top priority at the City of Brampton. Appointments will be made two days a week to limit the number of visitors at City facilities while they are still closed to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. Civil ceremonies remain cancelled at this time.
