Brampton winter storm update: what you need to know

Brampton has been hit hard by a major winter storm that brought record-breaking snowfall. Here’s what you need to know today, January 29:

Service Levels
Snow stopped falling at about 4:30 am, and crews are in the midst of a massive cleanup of roads, sidewalks, trails, transit stops, school crossings, and fire hall and recreation centre parking lots.

Crews are working hard to get to every area of the city, but it will take some time. Due to the severity of this storm, a significant weather event was declared. All snow clearing operations are expected to be completed within 48 hours after the end of the snowfall (Thursday, January 31 by 4:30 am).

Some roads and sidewalks will be difficult to travel on until they are cleared. Please slow down and allow yourself extra time.

We appreciate our residents’ cooperation and patience during this cleanup. Once the cleanup is complete, residents can call 311 or email 311@brampton.ca if they feel their street has been missed.

Reminders:
• Residential streets are not plowed to bare pavement like main roads. It is normal for some snow to remain on your street after the plow goes by.
• As crews clear the roads, snow will be left at the end of residents’ driveways. We understand that this can be frustrating for residents, but unfortunately these snow piles (‘windrows’) are unavoidable.
• Please move all parked cars off the street so that crews can safely clear it.
• Please help keep sidewalks safe by clearing them of snow and ice. For senior citizens and residents living with permanent disabilities, the City offers snow removal financial assistance. Learn more at www.brampton.ca/snow

Transit
Brampton Transit is experiencing delays on some routes. Please leave yourself lots of extra travel time. For updates, follow @BramptonTransit on Twitter or call 905.874.2999. Be careful and watch your step at bus stops and terminals.

Recreation Centres
Recreation centres are open, but most registered and drop-in programs are cancelled this morning. Regular programming is expected to resume this afternoon. Residents are asked to call their recreation centre in advance.

Brampton Library
All Brampton Library branches are closed this morning and will reopen at 1 pm.
