Ryerson University and the City of Brampton to conduct community consultations for proposed School of Medicine

Today, Ryerson University (renaming in process*) and the City of Brampton announced a series of community town halls that will gather important input for the proposed School of Medicine. These community consultations are part of the next phase in creating the university’s proposal to make Brampton the home of a community-centric medical school focused on inclusivity, innovation and primary care.

There will be a total of five consultations taking place between October 28 and November 23. Members of the Brampton community are invited to attend the virtual town hall co-hosted by local councillors and Ryerson leadership. Attendees will have a chance to learn about the School of Medicine proposal and discuss its community impact.

"Input from the community is a vital part of this process,” said Ryerson University President and Vice-Chancellor, Mohamed Lachemi. “We want to build a School of Medicine that is rooted not only in research, innovation and technology, but one that also reflects the needs of the people of Brampton and Peel Region. I encourage everyone to join us so we can make this a reality together.”

In July, Brampton City Council voted in favour of a $1 million planning grant to help fund a future School of Medicine in the city, matching the funding invested by the Province of Ontario earlier this year.

Ryerson’s proposed School of Medicine is centred around five pillars. These five pillars are an essential discussion point of the upcoming town halls:

  1. Community centric primary care
  2. Culturally respectful care
  3. Innovation and technology
  4. Inter-professional health care networks
  5. Support for the health and wellbeing of seniors

“Historically, Brampton has not received its fair share of funding in health care services resulting in hospital overcrowding and hallway medicine. Through the creation of a medical school, we have the opportunity to strengthen our city’s healthcare system to one that fosters local talent, creates economic growth and is considerate of our cultural diversity,” said Brampton Mayor, Patrick Brown. “This starts with ensuring our community members are heard and that their feedback is considered, and I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to participate in these important discussions.”

Observations from the community consultations will help inform Ryerson’s proposal for the School of Medicine, which will be submitted to the Province of Ontario.
