City of Brampton commemorates life of former Premier and Brampton resident Bill Davis

Book of Condolences available at Brampton City Hall

BRAMPTON, ON (August 12, 2021) – The City of Brampton joins the country in mourning the passing of the Honourable William (Bill) Grenville Davis PC, CC, OOnt, QC, lovingly known locally as “Brampton Billy”, on August 8, 2021. Premier Davis served the Province as the 18th Premier of Ontario from 1971 to 1985. Prior to this, Mr. Davis served as an MPP for the ridings of Peel (’59-’67), Peel North (’67-’75), and Brampton (’75-’85).

On August 8, the City lowered flags at all facilities and dimmed Brampton City Hall’s Clock Tower in memory of Premier Davis. A book of condolences is available until August 27, at the front doors of City Hall during weekday business hours of 8:30 am - 4:30 pm for members of the public who wish to pay their respects. Click here to leave your messages in the online condolences book.

Yesterday at its regular meeting of City Council, Members of Brampton City Council held a moment of silence and shared memories on the many significant contributions Mr. Davis made to public life in Brampton and across the province and country. In early July, City Council approved a request from former Brampton Mayor Peter Robertson that commits $100,000 to commission a monument within the City in honour of former Premier Davis.

In November 2019, Mr. Davis received Brampton’s “Key to the City” from Mayor Patrick Brown. The “Key to the City” is a symbolic honour that a municipality bestows upon a highly valued member of the community or a celebrated or dignified guest of the City of Brampton who has made an impact on the lives of the residents of the city.

A private funeral will be held with a public celebration of life to take place in September 2021. In consultation with the family, residents may also make donations to the charity of their choice in Premier Davis’ honour.
