Hurontario Light Rail Transit construction on track to begin 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRAMPTON, ON (October 22, 2019) – The City of Brampton welcomes the exciting announcement by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx that Mobilinx has officially signed the contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.

Major construction is expected to begin in early 2020 with completion in fall 2024. City staff is currently in conversation with Metrolinx regarding the relocation of the Brampton Gateway LRT stop to the north side of the Hurontario/Steeles intersection. A report to Council is expected following those discussions.

The City of Brampton has been working with Metrolinx and the City of Mississauga on the implementation of the Hurontario LRT from Port Credit GO to Brampton Gateway Terminal. The Hurontario LRT will be an integral part of the regional transportation network and provide residents and businesses in Brampton and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area with fast, reliable, convenient and integrated transit.

The Hurontario LRT project helps make Brampton a Green City, as per the 2018-2022 Term of Council Priorities, by equalizing all forms of transportation.

“Better transit helps increase accessibility to services and jobs, reduces traffic conditions and greenhouse gas emissions, and improves the overall health of our community. This is an exciting milestone announcement and we know that the LRT is key in meeting future regional demands. We look forward to more developments, including discussions on a tunneled option for the LRT extension that would lead into downtown Brampton.”
Mayor Patrick Brown
