Treat Accessibly

Brampton is a Mosaic, and the City of Brampton is dedicated to identifying opportunities to increase accessibility and a strong sense of belonging for all across its diverse community. Brampton homeowners are welcome to place a Treat Accessibly sign on their front lawn to let residents know that if a trick-or-treater has a disability, they can experience Halloween without barriers at their home. Lawn signs will be available for pick-up at Fright Night locations led by Recreation, or can be printed online at www.treataccessibly.com

Treat Accessibly also has the following tips for homeowners:
• Make sure the path to a trick-or-treating area is well lit
• Clear driveways and pathways
• Move cars out of the driveway to allow better accessibility for trick-or-treaters
• Create a trick-or-treat station at the end of a driveway, out of a garage or a vehicle’s trunk
• Refrain from using strobe lights or high-pitched, sudden loud noises
• Keep pets safe and secure

This event is hosted by the City of Brampton for teens and adults living with a disability. This year’s event includes a catered dinner, costume contest, spot-dance prizes and more! Support workers are welcome at no cost, and are only required to purchase a dinner ticket, as required.  Registration is now open. For event details and to register, visit brampton.ca/recreation.

Pumpkin Party – Tuesday, November 1, 4 to 8 pm, Ken Whillans Square

Residents are invited to dress in their Halloween costumes, bring their pumpkins and light them up one last time at Ken Whillans Square. The event will also include a photo booth, live performances, giveaways, interactive games along with a waste and environmental information station. This year’s event will also see the return of the pumpkin smash! Admission is free. Learn more at brampton.ca/events.

Halloween Safety

The City reminds residents to stay vigilant, avoid fire hazards and prevent injuries while getting into the spirit of Halloween. When choosing a costume:

• Keep costumes short to avoid trips and falls
• Choose flame resistant costumes and accessories
• Stay well lit. Pick brightly coloured costumes that can be clearly seen by motorists

When decorating:
• Remember that dried flowers, cornstalks and paper can catch fire very easily
• Keep decorations away from open flames and heat sources
• Keep exits clear of decorations and obstructions
• Light your jack-o-lantern with battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of lit candles
• Eliminate trip hazards and keep outdoor lights on to keep trick or treaters safe
Make sure all smoke alarms in the home are working properly
