To the Members of Provincial Parliament

As a resident of Brampton, I am deeply concerned about the safety of our streets. Speeding continues to put lives at risk, and we need effective measures to protect our community.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are a proven, evidence-based solution that reduce speeding, improve driver behaviour and protect all road users. In Brampton, ASE has captured drivers traveling at speeds of up to 200 km/h in Community Safety Zones. Without ASE, these extreme offences would go undetected, leaving communities exposed to serious and preventable risk. ASE is a critical part of keeping streets safe and fostering a culture of responsible driving in our community.

On October 1, Council unanimously approved program enhancements designed to strengthen road safety while directly reflecting resident feedback. These updates build on the City’s strong track record of evidence-based enforcement and demonstrate our commitment to both best practices and community input. The enhancements keep ASE focused on school locations, target only excessive speeding and stunt driving, and ensure enforcement is applied fairly and transparently - including adjustments during non-peak hours to better address the most dangerous driving behaviours.

Our most vulnerable road users are at the highest risk. Children are still developing the physical, cognitive and perceptual skills needed to safely judge vehicle speeds and gaps in traffic. Each year, dozens are seriously injured or killed in pedestrian collisions while walking to school or playing in their neighbourhoods. Seniors face similar risks, as slower reaction times, reduced mobility and physical frailty make even minor collisions potentially life-threatening. By enforcing safer speeds, ASE helps protect children, seniors and all residents, giving everyone a better chance of arriving home safely. ASE also helps ensure police resources can focus on tackling more serious crimes, such as auto theft and violent offences, rather than routine traffic enforcement.

I am urging the provincial government to:

  1. Maintain ASE cameras in Ontario, particularly near school locations, helping reduce speeding and ensuring the safety of children and other vulnerable road users.
  2. Strengthen program standards, oversight and transparency to ensure ASE programs are fair, consistent and effective.
  3. Protect municipal investments already made in good faith to improve road safety and prevent injuries and fatalities.

ASE is a lifesaving measure that has proven to make a tangible difference in our community. I respectfully ask that you represent residents’ voices and advocate to the Government of Ontario to maintain and enhance this critical program, ensuring the continued safety of our streets.

Thank you for your leadership and for representing the concerns of your constituents on this important issue.
