The City of Brampton is calling on the Ontario Government to maintain Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) programs and to reverse its decision to bring forward legislation banning ASE across the province.

To strengthen road safety, reflect community feedback and show its commitment to collaborating with the Province, Brampton City Council has proposed program enhancements, pending final approval at the next Council meeting.

In 2019, the Government of Ontario allowed municipalities to use Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras in School and Community Safety Zones to reduce speeding and improve road safety.

Brampton has used ASE responsibly, following provincial standards and the program has successfully reduced speeds, improved driver behaviour and protected children and other vulnerable road users.

On September 25, the Province announced plans to ban ASE, jeopardizing years of progress and municipal investment.

Brampton Takes Action

Council unanimously passed a motion opposing the ban on ASE and endorsed program enhancements to strengthen road safety and reflect resident feedback. Pending final approval by City Council, these updates will focus on protecting children and vulnerable road users, targeting the most dangerous driving behaviours and ensuring enforcement is fair, transparent and accountable.

Key Enhancements:

  • Prioritize safety in school locations by limiting ASE cameras to these areas, ensuring protection for children and other vulnerable road users.
  • Target the most dangerous speeding behaviours by maintaining existing speed thresholds during peak hours and applying higher thresholds during non-peak hours to capture excessive speeding and stunt driving.
  • Implement a cap on the number of tickets that can be issued to a single licence plate within a set period, while excluding cases of excessive speeding and stunt driving.
  • Prevent unfair ticketing by prohibiting ASE operation for six months following a speed limit change.
  • Reinvest in road safety by directing all surplus ASE revenue into initiatives, infrastructure and educational programs that promote safer streets.
  • Ensure accountability through annual reporting to Council on ASE program outcomes and revenue allocation.

We urge the Government of Ontario to:

  • Maintain ASE cameras in school locations.
  • Work with municipalities to strengthen program standards, oversight and transparency.
  • Amend legislation and fee structures to ensure fairness.
  • Protect municipal investments made under the Province’s regulatory framework.

We are stronger together. Brampton encourages all municipalities to:

  • Advocate to the Province to reconsider the ASE ban.
  • Support evidence-based road safety programs.
  • Call for consistent, transparent standards to keep roads safe.

To the Members of Provincial Parliament

As a resident of Brampton, I am deeply concerned about the safety of our streets. Speeding continues to put lives at risk, and we need effective measures to protect our community.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are a proven, evidence-based solution that reduce speeding, improve driver behaviour and protect all road users. In Brampton, ASE has captured drivers traveling at speeds of up to 200 km/h in Community Safety Zones. Without ASE, these extreme offences would go undetected, leaving communities exposed to serious and preventable risk. ASE is a critical part of keeping streets safe and fostering a culture of responsible driving in our community.

Council unanimously approved program enhancements designed to strengthen road safety while directly reflecting resident feedback. Pending final approval by City Council, these updates build on the City’s strong track record of evidence-based enforcement and demonstrate the City’s commitment to best practices and community-informed decision-making. The enhancements keep ASE focused on school locations, target only excessive speeding and stunt driving, and ensure enforcement is applied fairly and transparently - including adjustments during non-peak hours to better address the most dangerous driving behaviours.

Our most vulnerable road users are at the highest risk. Children are still developing the physical, cognitive and perceptual skills needed to safely judge vehicle speeds and gaps in traffic. Each year, dozens are seriously injured or killed in pedestrian collisions while walking to school or playing in their neighbourhoods. Seniors face similar risks, as slower reaction times, reduced mobility and physical frailty make even minor collisions potentially life-threatening. By enforcing safer speeds, ASE helps protect children, seniors and all residents, giving everyone a better chance of arriving home safely. ASE also helps ensure police resources can focus on tackling more serious crimes, such as auto theft and violent offences, rather than routine traffic enforcement.

I am urging the provincial government to:

  1. Maintain ASE cameras in Ontario, particularly near school locations, helping reduce speeding and ensuring the safety of children and other vulnerable road users.
  2. Strengthen program standards, oversight and transparency to ensure ASE programs are fair, consistent and effective.
  3. Protect municipal investments already made in good faith to improve road safety and prevent injuries and fatalities.

ASE is a lifesaving measure that has proven to make a tangible difference in our community. I respectfully ask that you represent residents’ voices and advocate to the Government of Ontario to maintain and enhance this critical program, ensuring the continued safety of our streets.

Thank you for your leadership and for representing the concerns of your constituents on this important issue.
