In June 2019 staff brought
forward a report to Planning Committee highlighting the current enforcement
measures in place to deal with student housing. The item was referred back to
staff for further review and to report back to Planning Committee to work with
education institutions, developers and other interested parties to address
affordable housing and other student housing needs.
Staff have been engaging in
discussions with the post-secondary institutions over the past year to foster a
relationship and gain insight on the various challenges being faced by each
institution. We are moving forward with establishing an informal/advisory
committee (Q2 2021) with participation from post-secondary institutions and
community stakeholders to identify, prioritize specific issues and concerns
(i.e. student housing & landlord relations, health & safety), and make
recommendations that may influence policy development and resource allocation.
