On May 15, Brampton City Council unanimously approved moving forward on three major projects that will spur downtown revitalization and enhance new developments in the city’s core. Building on the 2040 Vision and Term of Council Priorities, these initiatives will focus on the City’s efforts to create complete communities, unlock economic potential and reinforce Brampton’s unique position on the Innovation Corridor.
Centre for Innovation (CFI): Brampton’s Centre for Innovation will be an iconic gateway building offering a new central library providing opportunities for digital creation and programming, performance and audio recording, assistive technologies for various abilities, and culture days. The library will provide flexible office spaces to engage residents and community partners. The CFI will be a landmark for train passengers entering or departing the city from the Downtown Brampton GO station. The City will work with community partners and key stakeholders to determine the programming needs of the building and then proceed to the tender phase. In 2018, six architecture firms were pre-qualified for design services for this exciting project.
Downtown Brampton Transit Terminal: Committee of Council’s decision will explore expanding the existing Downtown Transit Terminal that is currently operating at full capacity, in conjunction with the CFI and the entire site which includes 8 Nelson Street West and 14 Nelson Street West. In order to unlock Downtown and support the transit needs of Brampton residents, the City will begin a study to determine the best configuration and location of the future transit hub.
Hurontario Main Light Rail Transit (HMLRT): The City will update the current environmental assessment study to include a range of transit opportunities, including: the original Hurontario-Main Light Rail Transit approved route; a Main-George One-Way Loop; underground tunneling options; and incorporate elements of enhanced streetscaping for Downtown Reimagined where possible. The proposed location and development of the CFI includes the possibility of a LRT route within the Main Street North Right-of-Way. The configuration of LRT routes will not be impacted by the proposed location of the CFI
