Brampton Artist in Residence Sima Naseem

The Brampton Artist in Residence program is a new initiative between the Brampton Arts Organization and the Brampton Library. The program offers local professional artists, collectives, and arts organizations an $8,000 artist fee and free, dedicated private workspace to undertake a community-based artist residency at Brampton Library’s Four Corners branch.

Brampton Artist in Residence Sima Naseem 

Sima Naseem

Sima is a Brampton-based Pakistani-Canadian mixed media and film artist who works with multiple mediums with a focus on animation, and public art. She enjoys telling stories of exploration, discovery, and her personal life. Sima uses bright colours and playful designs to create a positive impact on her community through inclusivity, diversity and inspirational imagery. Sima is always looking for new and creative ways to share her cultural and personal experiences through art.

Office Hours: Every Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Sima will hold weekly public office hours on Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. from September to November 2023. Sima’s office hours offer mentorship to aspiring artists who are interested in developing their skills and create networking opportunities for fellow artists to explore collaboration in the future. The general public is also welcome to drop by to meet Sima and learn about her art and the community-based stop motion animation film she is going to be co-creating with youth (aged 10 to 14 years old).

Workshops: 

Sima will deliver free community-focused public arts programming through a series of workshops for youth aged 10 to 14 years.

October 15, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Storyelling Workshop​

Join Brampton's Artist in Residence, Sima Naseem, in this engaging storytelling workshop. Participants will be given the prompt, “Together we flourish,” and brainstorm potential stories together. Once the group decides on a story, each participant will design their own characters. This session, along with the Puppet Creation and Animation workshops taking place on October 22, October 29 and November 5 will lead toward a short stop-motion film that will be screened on December 10th at 11:00 a.m.. October 22, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Puppet Creation Workshop​

Create a puppet in this engaging workshop led by Brampton's Artist in Residence, Sima Naseem. Based on character creations from the Storytelling workshop on October 15, participants will build puppets using recycled goods, old clothing and magazines. Sima will demonstrate how to build paper and 3D puppets. Make sure to bring your recycled materials! This session, along with the Storytelling and Animation workshops will lead toward a short stop-motion film that will be screened on December 10th. Registration is required to participate.*​

October 29, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm - Animation Workshop

Brampton's Artist in Residence, Sima Naseem, will introduce participants of this workshop to the world of animation. Sima will host a lesson on animating a stop-motion character. Participants will then animate their own characters using green screens. This session, along with the Storytelling and Puppet Creation workshops will lead toward a final stop-motion film that will be screened on December 10th. Please register and the library will contact you to select a one-hour time slot. Registration is required to participate.*​

November 5, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm - Animation Workshop

Film Screening & Celebration: December 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.

Join Sima and her youth co-creators as they host a film screening to showcase their collaborative work. A gallery space will be set up during the event displaying the puppets, sets, and artwork used to create the film in the auditorium of the Brampton Library, Four Corners Branch.
