Prepare Your Car for Winter
- Battery is fully charged and in good condition.
- Windshield wipers are operational and washer fluid is sufficient.
- Tires are in good condition with the proper air pressure.
- Lights and signals are fully operational.
- Heater and defroster work.
- Cooling system is in good working order, including the radiator and the strength of the anti-freeze.
- Keep an emergency kit in your car.
- Schedule a winter maintenance tune-up.
Driving in Winter Conditions
- Clear your entire vehicle of snow and ice.
- Maintain a safe distance between vehicles.
- Slow down, even if it means it takes longer to arrive at your destination.
- Watch out for ice, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
- Use your vehicle’s full lighting system to ensure other vehicles see you.
- Maintain a safe distance from snow clearing vehicles.
- Avoid braking suddenly on slippery roads.
- Ensure your fuel tank is at least half full.
- If stranded, use your cell phone, emergency flashers, flares, or a Call Police Sign. Always stay with your vehicle until help arrives.
