Utility Locates are a process for identifying and labelling underground public utility mains and cables to protect them from damage during excavation. Different colour paint is used to mark each type of utility such as; orange for telecommunications wires, red for electrical cables, and yellow for natural gas.
Before starting to excavate for construction, landscaping or any other project, you must notify all utility companies before you dig so that they can locate and mark their underground services. Once all utilities are marked, you can dig safely and avoid possible costly repair charges or even legal action. You can arrange for locates of utilities, free of cost, through Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255. For information on how long locate markings are valid for please contact Ontario One Call.
