Audible Pedestrian Signals (APS)

Audible Pedestrian Signal

The City of Brampton has installed Audible Pedestrian Signals (APS) at the following signalized intersections:

  • Main Street & Williams Parkway
  • Chapel Street/Market Square Boulevard & Queen Street
  • County Court Boulevard/Ray Lawson Boulevard & Hurontario Street
  • McLaughlin Road & Williams Parkway
  • McLaughlin Road & Kingknoll Drive/Sheridan College Boulevard
  • Hurontario Street & Wexford Road
  • Hurontario Street & Fisherman Drive
  • Sandalwood Parkway & Conestoga Drive
  • Vodden Street & Rutherford Road
  • Vodden Street & Hansen Road

An APS helps blind or visually impaired people to safely cross a street.

Non-visual information such as, audible tones (i.e. bird sounds) for different approaches, raised directional arrows, and/or vibrating push buttons are used along with the pedestrian WALK display.

Midblock Pedestrian Signal (MPS)

A Mid-Block Pedestrian Signal (MPS) is a traffic signal designed to assist pedestrians to safely cross a busy street between intersections in areas with high pedestrian volumes.

Traffic signals control vehicles on the street. Vehicle stop bars are kept 1 metre from the crosswalk to minimize conflicts with pedestrians.

Countdown Pedestrian SignalsPedestrian Countdown Signal

Pedestrian signals are often misunderstood. Therefore, the City has implemented a new policy to install pedestrian countdown timers at all new and upgraded traffic signals.

The timer counts down when the flashing orange hand symbol is displayed to indicate to the pedestrian how much time they have to safely cross.
