Pedestrian and Driver Safety

Driver Safety Tips and Videos

  Driver Safety Tips
1. Approach intersections with caution.  Be aware of other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists even if you have a green light.
2. Yield to pedestrians crossing the street even if the crosswalk is not marked.
3. Expect the unexpected, never assume that another driver sees you.
4. Stop well in advance of the stop bar or crosswalk line.  Do not enter an intersection that you may not be able to exit before the light changes.
5. Do not pass or overtake a vehicle stopped or stopping for a pedestrian.
6. Watch for cyclists and pedestrians at all times, especially when visibility is poor.
7.

Yield to pedestrians when making a turn.

8. Use your signals well in advance of a turn.
9. When turning right on a red light, keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.
10. Be patient. Some pedestrians may take longer to cross the street than others.
11.

Use caution when operating a large vehicle. Others may not be aware of how much room large vehicles need to turn.

12. Please obey all posted speed limits.  Studies have shown that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 60km/h is 70% more likely to be seriously injured than a pedestrian struck at 50km/h.
