Bicycle Facilities

Cycling is a healthy and economical way to travel around the city. It can contribute to the reduced dependence on automobiles, which is a key goal for building and achieving healthy communities. The City of Brampton is currently developing an action plan to integrate a safe and efficient city-wide pathway system into future road widening and rehabilitation projects.
The Brampton Pathways Master Plan provides the framework for the development of the City’s pathways system. The City of Brampton Official Plan promotes the integration of bicycle facilities into appropriate road rights of way. The primary goal of the action plan is to provide a city-wide pathway system that will safely and efficiently accommodate both recreational and commuting cyclists.
Existing facilities include:
- Bicycle lanes
- Bicycle detectors at traffic signals
- Multi-use paths
Cycling in Brampton
The City of Brampton has already begun to integrate cycling into current and future transportation planning. Brampton Transit has launched the Bike & Ride initiative, designed to encourage transit riders to combine cycling with public transit. For more information on the Bike & Ride initiative, click here.
Where Can I Ride My Bicycle?
Under City By-Law 93-93, cyclists are not permitted to ride their bicycles on the sidewalk, except for directly crossing a sidewalk. However, the more vulnerable cyclists, such as those with wheels less than 20 inches (50 cm) in diameter, are permitted to ride on the sidewalk.
