Stormwater Management Ponds
Stormwater runoff is rainwater that flows across the land and is routed into drainage systems and ultimately into our natural areas such as creeks, lakes and wetlands. Urbanization reduces the amount of water that can be absorbed into the ground through the increase of impervious surfaces such as roads, driveways, sidewalks and roofs. These impervious surfaces interfere with the natural hydrologic cycle by increasing the amount of stormwater runoff into our watercourses if left uncontrolled. This increase to the stormwater runoff can result in increased risks to flooding, erosion, watercourse health and aquatic life. To manage these increased risks the City often requires developers to construct stormwater management ponds to control stormwater runoff from their subdivisions. Upon assumption of the subdivision, the City of Brampton starts maintaining the stormwater management ponds.
What is the City of Brampton’s role in pond maintenance?
Removal of debris in and around the pond
Removal of invasive vegetation
Maintenance of structures such as gates and valves
Maintenance of surrounding vegetation and plants
Vegetation replacement if required
Bank stabilization to prevent erosion
Pond monitoring
Occasional pond sampling, testing and dredging (once every 10 years or as needed)
How can citizens help keep our ponds clean?
Do not litter in or around the pond
Minimize fertilizer use
Do not dispose grass clippings or leaves into the pond
Do not disturb vegetation around the pond
Storm drains ultimately discharge into storm ponds; therefore they are for stormwater runoff only
Never let chemicals (motor oil, antifreeze, paint, soapy water, etc.) discharge into storm drains or into ponds
Report illegal dumping in the pond to By-law Enforcement Services at 905-458-3424
Obey all signs posted around the ponds
Is it safe to use the pond?
Do not swim, wade, skate or boat within the stormwater pond
Exercise safety around stormwater ponds as conditions in the ponds can change rapidly which can include fluctuating water levels and thin ice
