Anti-idling

• Brampton’s municipal fleet anti-idling policy began in 2005
• No vehicle or equipment will idle for longer than 3 minutes
• Municipal vehicles are not permitted to use “drive-through windows” at restaurants, banking institutions etc.
• Unoccupied vehicles must be turned off
• Ride-on/hand-held equipment must be turned off when not in use 

Did You Know? If you stop idling for 10 minutes a day, you can save $300 and reduce CO2 emissions by 542 kg each year.

Biodiesel Fuel

• Biodiesel fuel produces fewer exhaust emissions than regular fuel and is made from waste or renewable resources. The City’s biodiesel is made from renewable soy beans
• In 2003, Brampton became the first municipality in Canada to use biodiesel fuel in its fleet of vehicles and equipment. In December 2004, Brampton Transit started using biodiesel fuel
• Biodiesel is usually blended and represented as a percentage. For example, B-20 means 80 per cent is ultra-low sulphur petro diesel and 20 per cent is pure bio fuel
• The City’s diesel-powered vehicles and equipment use blends ranging from B-5 to B-20 (seasonally adjusted). When B-20 is used in the summer, savings can be as high as 25 per cent per litre

Did You Know? Every year, the City uses 8 million litres of blended biodiesel fuel.

Smart Cars

• Brampton first purchased Smart Cars in 2006
• Operate on biodiesel fuel
• The City currently owns 11 Smart Cars

Hybrid Cars

• Brampton first purchased hybrid cars in 2006
• Operate on gas and battery power
• The City currently owns 18 hybrid cars

Did You Know? Smart Cars and hybrids have reduced the City’s CO2 emissions by 32,000 kilograms per year and saved the City $13,000 in fuel per year.

Right Sizing

• Every vehicle in the City’s fleet goes through a “right-sizing” review to make sure that the vehicle meets our operational needs when we buy it and throughout its lifecycle.
• City staff conduct a cost benefit and environmental impact analysis to reduce operating costs and CO2 emissions.

Züm Buses

• Züm, Brampton's new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service uses brand new buses.
• Feature state-of-the-art operations and amenities.
• Clean hybrid diesel-electric technology will reduce fuel by 10 to 15 per cent compared to conventional diesel vehicles.
• Lower overall weight will reduce noise, ride more smoothly, and lower emissions.
