Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park is a civic landmark and a local and regional destination. With an area of 40 hectares, many activities take place within the park, including winter sports, formal gardens, petting zoo, water play, sports and so on. Development has taken place pragmatically to fulfill the needs of the public since the park was established in the early 1970s.
The City has been looking to invest in Chinguacousy Park to improve the amenities, unify the design of the buildings and other features through the master planning process, and realize the park’s potential as an outstanding, showcase destination park for the City and beyond.

Chinguacousy Park will undergo a major refresh having received $24.5 million as part of the Infrastructure Stimulus Funding announced in June of 2009. The funding will be distributed by the federal, provincial and the City of Brampton, with each contributing $8.2 million.

The project primarily focuses on renewal and enhancement of current park facilities, and increased capacity to meet the demands of Canada’s second fastest growing city. The overall character of the park will be retained while current park programs will be continued and enhanced.

Key features of the project included:

Upgrade of basic park services (e.g. sewer, water, electrical)
Upgrade and expansion of park buildings
Upgrade of sports fields (artificial turf, lighting)
General park upgrades and improvements (e.g., picnic areas, play areas)
Watercourse enhancements (ponds and creek)
Roadway and parking improvements
Accessibility improvements

Now that funding has been confirmed, City staff will focus on detailing and scheduling the various components of the project. The funding program requires that work be substantially completed by August 1st 2011 and new waterfront pavillion Fall 2011.
