The City’s fence by-laws restrict you from building a fence in a rear or side yard higher than 2 metres (6 feet, 6 inches) and in a front yard higher than one metre (39 inches).
The by-laws further restrict the height of fences and hedges on a corner lot. The City restricts fences on corner lots so that pedestrians and drivers can see over the fence and see what’s coming toward them around the corner.
While the City does not ordinarily require you to get a permit for building fences, you should make sure that you don’t inadvertently build your fence on a neighbour’s or the City’s property.
Depending on the size of the hedge, the City considers a hedge to be a fence. Please contact Zoning to find out how high you can build a fence on your property.
