Building a Better Brampton

Revitalization of Peel Memorial Hospital Site

“As Mayor of Brampton, I believe that high-quality, accessible health care for residents must be a top priority in our culturally diverse and fast-growing city.

City Council has consistently advocated that Brampton requires two hospitals to meet the current and emerging health care needs of our community.  This view is underscored by the fact that Brampton has been designated a high-growth municipality by the Government of Ontario in its Places to Grow legislation.  My Council colleagues and I have always believed that if Brampton is required to grow, we must also be given the right tools to help manage that growth, including increased investments in health care infrastructure.

At Council on March 31, 2010, the William Osler Health System presented its vision for the revitalization of the former Peel Memorial Hospital site, and requested that the City of Brampton commit to a $60 million contribution towards the $120 million local community share.  As recommended in my Head of Council report on the redevelopment of the former Peel Memorial Hospital site, Council voted in favour of a motion to commit to a $60 million contribution, pending provincial government approval of the $420 million redevelopment plan that has been submitted by the William Osler Health System to the Ministry of Health.

In a time when municipalities must compete for scarce health care resources, I believe that this $60 million commitment is a bold statement to the provincial government that this community is ready and wants this project underway.

The proposed revitalization plan has been approved by the Central West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), but it has not yet been approved by the Government of Ontario.  It is my hope that an early and significant financial commitment by the City of Brampton will clearly demonstrate to the provincial government that our community is serious about bringing health care back to the Peel Memorial site.

As we move forward in this process, it is important that we come together to support the William Osler Health System and this plan.”
