Earth Hour 2011
March 26th marked Earth Hour – the annual international lights-out event that challenged people and businesses to take one small action in a much larger fight against climate change.
Hundreds of millions of people across the globe accepted the challenge. Brampton was one of 422 Canadian cities participating and amongst more than 4,000 participating municipalities across 134 countries worldwide.
So… how did we do?
According to statistics from Hydro One Brampton, our city saw an 8.5 megawatt decrease in energy consumption during Earth Hour. This is equivalent to removing 7,000 homes from Brampton’s distribution system for that hour.
We are proud of the City’s participation and offer a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to every community member who stepped up to the challenge.
But now that Earth Hour is behind us, we encourage residents and businesses alike to go above and beyond the hour, by adopting an energy aware lifestyle. Together, we are all part of the solution in betterment of the one thing that unites us all – the planet.
