Bram East Library

Background

The City of Brampton continues to experience growth in the northeast. Providing a much needed library, community centre facility and parkland to serve the growing communities in this area has become a priority. As such, development of these facilities has been identified in the Library Facilities Master Plan Update.

On April 30, 2009 the City finalized the purchase of approximately 120 acres commonly referred to as the Fitzpatrick Lands at the northwest corner of Castlemore Road and The Gore Road. The purchase, adjacent to other City owned land commonly known as the McVean Castlemore Lands, created a significant open space with the opportunity for a future city-wide park. The Brampton East Library and Community Centre has been envisioned as a wide-scale project located within the Fitzpatrick Lands which will initiate the development of this major city park.

The project budget is $36 million. These costs support the construction of a 35,000 square foot library facility and a 35,000 square foot community centre facility. The project, when complete, could be approximately 300,000 square feet.

When acquiring parkland, the City’s objective was for parkland large and accessible enough to provide an array of services for the advantage of all of the residents of Brampton East and the City as a whole. The Fitzpatrick property provides a great venue for active and passive recreational development that will benefit all residents of Brampton.

Investment in the new library and community centre is one of several investments in the area of northeast Brampton. Other major projects include:

• an investment of $766,000 for the Brampton Soccer Centre (link here to the soccer centre) (to include additions to HVAC systems that will improve temperature controls and comfort level)
• an investment of $1.9 million in the Ebenezer Heritage Community Centre (link here to the Ebenezer Heritage Community Centre) (centre to be moved further back from the street to be followed by repairs and rehabilitative work to improve accessibility and mechanical and electrical systems. Work will begin by year end 2010 and be completed by March 2011
• investment for the creation of a new cricket facility (in anticipation of the 2015 Pan American Games. Timing of construction is TBD).

The Brampton East Library and Community Centre will provide much needed services to the growing communities in northeast Brampton. This facility will help to meet the healthy lifestyle, multicultural and educational needs of Brampton families as the City is committed to helping families get active and stay active through its provision of recreation services. Residents are most proud of their parks, recreation and culture facilities and we are working to ensure we sustain that pride into the future.

The Brampton East Library and Community Centre will seek LEED Silver certification. Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings follow design and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment.
