The City of Brampton and the Accessibility Advisory Committee understand that inclusion and full participation of people with disabilities requires a commitment from all levels of government. The City is working to improve opportunities for all people with disabilities.

Accessibility responsibilities extend to facilities, programs and services owned, operated and/or leased by the City of Brampton.

The City encourages all private business owners and service providers to accept the same responsibilities to ensure inclusion for persons with disabilities in all aspects of daily living.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005

In June 2005, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), new legislation designed to make Ontario fully accessible for people with disabilities, received Royal Assent and is now law.

The purpose of the AODA 2005 is to benefit all Ontarians by developing, implementing and enforcing accessibility standards in order to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities by 2025.  The scope of the legislation includes the private sector, as well as government and the broader public sector.

The AODA:

  • Addresses the need for the development of mandatory standards to cover the full range of disabilities and barriers;
  • Introduces timelines to ensure the standards are implemented in a timely manner;
  • Provides standards to be incorporated in business and capital planning cycles to help manage the cost impact; and
  • Provides for the development and implementation of an enforcement tool to ensure compliance.

As of Fall 2009, accessibility standards have been developed and enacted by provincial regulation for Customer Service. Draft standards have been developed for Information and Communications, Employment, Transportation, and the Built Environment.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 and the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001

Legal obligations under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) remain in force until such time as the standards identified in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 have been developed and approved and the ODA is repealed.

Among other things, the ODA requires the City to prepare an annual accessibility plan. The intent of this plan is to improve opportunities for people with disabilities.

Annual Accessibility Plans must:

  1. Report on the measures taken to identify, remove and prevent barriers to people with disabilities.
  2. Describe measures in place to ensure bylaws, regulations, policies, programs, practices and services are assessed to determine their effect on accessibility for people with disabilities.
  3. List the policies, programs, practices and services to be reviewed in the coming year to identify barriers to people with disabilities.
  4. Describe the measures to be taken in the coming year to identify, remove and prevent barriers to people with disabilities.
  5. Be available to the public.

Persons with disabilities must be consulted in the development of the Accessibility Plan. The City of Brampton has established an Accessibility Advisory Committee to assist with the development of the City's 2013 – 2017 Municipal Accessibility Plan
