Central Area
The Central Area of Brampton comprises of Secondary Plan Area SP 7 and SP 36 and is approximately 6km in length. Brampton’s Central Area is composed of three distinct Precincts – the Historic Downtown, Queen Street Corridor and Bramalea Centre, each of them with special characteristics and distinct redevelopment models.
The Central Area is a major designated growth area in the GTA, an important Regional node with significant civic, institutional, cultural and entertainment facilities as well as important commercial, employment and residential areas.
The Vision for the Downtown Precinct is to become a destination, a civic and cultural centre, a liveable place with emphasis on quality, transit-oriented, pedestrian-friendly, based on mixed-use, mid-rise, street-oriented built forms with a strong urban character and high level of design with coherent, traditional based forms and details.
Central Area Planning
The Central Area Planning and Design group is responsible for the long-range planning, implementation and coordination of City efforts toward the revitalization and redevelopment of the Central Area into a vibrant mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly area that acts as the “heart” of the City of Brampton. The Group develops the broad planning framework, promotes high quality urban and architectural design in Central Area, and ensures the implementation of the Vision through the appropriate tools.
The section’s principle responsibilities in this area include:
- Developing and updating City’s policies as they relate to the Central Area (Official Plan, Secondary Plans, Zoning By-Laws, Community Improvement Plan, Urban Design Guidelines, Special Area Studies)
- Reviewing and coordinating Development Applications in the Central Area
- Performing design review for preliminary applications, studies, streetscape, signage
- Developing, implementing and administering the Community Improvement Plan
- Managing and coordinating Special Projects in the area including studies and master plans
- Coordinating and reviewing development and capital projects in the area
