Tourism Brampton embraces new Travel Trends

Wednesday, Aug 08 2007, 01:00

Weekend trippers, and niche travel markets, are the new “trends” in tourism and Brampton is targeting these travellers. Segments such as Agricultural Tourism, Heritage Tourism, Cultural Tourism, and Urban Green Tourism are strong and growing markets.

Tourism is big business in Canada and is changing with the times. With revenues of over $62 billion a year, it represents two percent of Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP), and employs over 700,000 directly and another 1 million indirectly.¹ Statistics for Peel Region alone show annual tourism-related expenditures of over $345 million, generating over $243 million in direct, indirect and induced contributions to GDP. ²

People today are incredibly busy. Both spouses are generally working full time, their jobs are more and more demanding, home life is hectic, and as a result people are not able to get away for long vacations any more. Recent statistics are now showing the average length of stay as five days, and tourists are not travelling as far from home.

With this change in travelling patterns, Brampton is developing self-guided, targeted, tours to capture those people who want a relaxing weekend away and don’t want to fly there to get it. Tourism Brampton has introduced a self-guided “Floral Tour” and is working on a “Green and Fall Colour Tour” and “Lakes & Rivers Tour”. The City of Brampton’s Heritage Coordinator will also introduce a new “Heritage Tour”. Brampton has a lot to be proud of and a lot to offer Tourists. In such a fast growing city, Brampton has managed to retain much of its wonderful natural features and heritage. Brampton still has great pick-your own farms, natural lakes, lush conservation areas, and is expanding its beautiful floral gardens every year.

Tourism Brampton’s new 2007-2008 Brampton Tourism Guide provides tourists with these and more reasons to make Brampton their weekend destination of choice, including the new Rose Theatre Brampton, art galleries, fun festivals & events, golfing, horseback riding, fishing, beaches, trails…and more.
