On Thursday, October 2, Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell and Mayor Matti Bower of Miami Beach, Florida, USA, signed a sister city agreement at Brampton City Hall. This agreement comes after a series of meetings between the two municipalities that included exchange of information and discussion on areas of mutual interest.
“This agreement is very significant as both the cities have a great deal to share. Brampton’s World Health Organization’s Safe Community designation, Communities in Bloom International title, the Safe City Association are all benchmarks of best practices. Similarly, Miami Beach is a leader in built heritage preservation, the promotion of the arts and culture and a rich multicultural city. Our municipal relationship will reach new heights as we further explore our community and economic development linkages and networks,” commented Mayor Susan Fennell.
“This is an excellent opportunity for both cities to benchmark and exchange ideas. The Miami Beach area is the major gateway to North America from the growing Caribbean and South American markets. Agreements such as this will help grow the economy of both cities,” said Mayor Matti Bower.
This agreement will allow both cities to:
- Promote mutual understanding;
- Develop cultural and economic ties;
- Strengthen links between institutions and public organizations in the two cities; and,
- Exchange commercial, educational, athletic and other civic and youth groups.
City Councils of Brampton and Miami Beach firmly believe that friendly ties between the two communities will contribute towards free exchange of ideas, opinions and information that will benefit all citizens.
There are basic four principles supporting the new agreement:
- Economic development and heritage preservation
This agreement, which has been reviewed and endorsed by the Canadian Consul General in South Florida, also builds on the existing ties between Brampton Symphony and Miami Beach arts and culture community. The sister city agreement stems from the mutual desire to promote understanding between the people of Canada and USA, and live in peace and friendship
