Life Sciences Theme as Four Brampton Companies among Greater Toronto’s Top Employers

William Osler Health System and Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories Inc. were recently named among Greater Toronto’s Top Employers. The pair joins two other Brampton based companies Loblaw Companies Limited and Medtronic of Canada Inc., who earlier this year were also named among Canada’s Top 100 Employers. Three of the four Brampton companies named have primary actives in the life sciences sector.
William Osler Health System operates Brampton’s primary healthcare facility, Brampton Civic Hospital, and will also be responsible for the modernized Peel Memorial when redevelopment is complete. In addition William Osler also runs Etobicoke General Hospital. As Ontario’s largest community hospital William Osler employs over 4,300 people.
Located at 115 Midair Court in Brampton, Gamma-Dynacare provides licensed medical diagnostic laboratory services to healthcare practitioners in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec. The company recently undertook a 31,000 square foot expansion of their Brampton head-office.
Rounding out the core of Brampton’s life sciences contribution to the Greater Toronto’s Top Employers list, Medtronic of Canada is a recent head-office addition to the City. The company employs over 100 people in Brampton and 400 across Canada.
With over 2,800 full-time employees at its’ local head office, Loblaw is one of Brampton’s and Canada’s largest private-sector employers. The Company employs in excess of 138,000 full-time and part-time employees at over 1,000 corporate and franchised stores across the country. As one of Canada’s largest drugstore providers, life sciences could also be considered a secondary sector for Loblaw.
The Greater Toronto Top Employers award recognizes employers with head offices or their principal business in the Toronto area who are industry leaders at creating exceptional workplaces and attracting and retaining employees. The winners were selected from among the 2,750 employers who submitted an application to this year's national competition, which evaluated employers based on a number of factors, including work atmosphere and communication, benefits, training and skills development and community involvement. Results of the competition are published annually in The Globe and Mail.
