Region of Peel Opens Integrated Waste Management Facility
Monday, Mar 27 2006, 12:00
The Region of Peel officially opened its Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) located on Torbram Road in Brampton. The IWMF includes a single-stream Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a Waste Transfer Station and an Organics Composting Plant.
Beginning March 13, 2006, residents in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon were able to mix their recyclable containers and paper in one recycling box. All collected recyclable items will be processed at the new MRF in Brampton. This new facility, complete with technologically advanced sorting equipment, has the capacity to process 130,000 tonnes of recyclable material per year.
Waste Management of Canada Corporation (WMCC) designed and built Peels IWMF at a cost of $35 million (excluding the composting system). The 16,000 square metre building houses an 8,000 square metre MRF, a 3,800 square metre waste transfer station and a 3,300 square metre organics composting plant, with maintenance areas, offices and amenities taking up the remaining area. The MRF and transfer station are now fully operational. Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd. is currently completing construction of the $8.3 million dollar organics composting system and commissioning of the system is expected to be completed later this spring.
The Region is responsible for the operation of the waste transfer station and the organics composting plant. WMCC is contracted to operate and maintain the MRF for a five-year period.
The Region of Peel provides waste management services in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and in the Town of Caledon. For more information on these programs call the 905-791-9499. Visit the Region of Peel Web site at peelregion.ca/waste.
