Thursday, Mar 18 2010, 03:00

Brampton’s MDA Corporation is part of a group leading the Hospital for Sick Children’s (SickKids) development of KidsArm, the first robotic surgical arm in the world specifically designed for paediatric surgery. Recently the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario announced they will be investing $10 million in the project.

MDA Corporation is perhaps best known for development of the CanadaArm, CanadaArm 2 and the Dextre robot that is now attached to the International Space Station.

KidsArm is being developed by the team at the Centre for Image-Guided Innovation & Therapeutic Intervention (CIGITI) at SickKids. The tool is an image-guided medical robot which enables surgeons to safely and efficiently perform less invasive surgical procedures. It will be capable of working in small and delicate spaces, under supervised image guidance. It will offer enhanced dexterity and precision, resulting in time savings both in surgery and in treatment. It can also cut down the average time of procedures by up to 90 per cent.
