Earth Hour - See your world in a whole new light

Tuesday, Mar 16 2010, 12:00

On March 27, from 8:30 – 9:30 pm, it will be lights out across Brampton. All non-essential lights will be turned off for one hour – Earth Hour – as the City of Brampton once again unites with millions around the world in the fight against climate change.

In partnership with Hydro One Brampton, the Peel District and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Boards and the Region of Peel, the City of Brampton is encouraging all businesses and residents to join the campaign and turn off all non-essential lights and appliances for one hour.

Last year, Brampton was one of over 4,000 cities in 88 countries that officially “switched off” in support of the planet. Hundreds of millions of people around the world participated. Here at home, the collective efforts of Brampton businesses and residents resulted in a 9.3 per cent (38.4 megawatt) reduction in electricity consumption – equivalent to taking 31,800 homes off the distribution system for that hour.

We’re hoping to make Earth Hour 2010 bigger and better. It continues to be a global call to action to every individual and every business. As WWF says, “it’s a call to stand up, to show leadership and to be responsible for our future.”

Answer the call by registering your business’ participation at http://wwf.ca/earthhour. It’s as simple as darkening your building, store, restaurant or neon signs for one hour. Encourage your colleagues, business partners and customers to participate and help show the world that the people of Brampton care about the health of the planet.
