Brownfield and Storm Water Management
Technical Seminar
April 10, 2008

The Cement Association of Canada and aboutREMEDIATION are pleased to extend this invitation to our stakeholder networks. Please note that this seminar is open to provincial, municipal and regional government employees only.

Overview - Brownfields
Solidification/Stabilization (S/S) is an established treatment technology that has been used to treat a variety of hazardous wastes and is used effectively in the remediation of brownfields and contaminated properties. S/S treatment involves mixing a binding reagent such as portland cement into the contaminated media or waste. The technology protects human health and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within the treated material. In the U.S., S/S has been selected for 23% of the EPA Superfund projects where the sources of contamination have been addressed. In Canada, S/S technology has been applied to remediation projects, including the Sydney Tar Ponds site in Nova Scotia.

Overview - Pavement and Storm Water Management
Pervious and permeable concrete pavements make an important contribution to achieving a community's sustainable development goals by reducing stormwater runoff and increasing stormwater infiltration. Stormwater runoff causes increased pollution in rivers and streams, flash floods and loss of rainwater that could otherwise replenish water tables and aquifers. In the case of pervious concrete, there is a 15 - 25% void structure in the hardened concrete. Permeable concrete pavements are infiltration trenches with paving over them to support pedestrians and vehicles. Parking lot pavement made of pervious/permeable concrete allows rainwater to filter through to underlying soil and is an excellent choice for stormwater management.

Who Should Attend
This seminar is being organized for municipal, provincial and regional government planners, engineers, storm water management and capital works professionals who are interested in learning about the use of S/S treatment as a cost-effective remediation method for brownfield properties, and environmental storm water management using pervious and permeable concrete pavement.
