Ontario's newest university officially celebrated the launch of satellite programs in Brampton with a series of open houses and a grand opening ceremony held on Thursday, November 26th at Algoma University's location at 373 Steeles Avenue West, Suite 205, adjacent to the campus of Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
Algoma University, based in Sault Ste. Marie, has offered specialized programs in computer science at the Davis Campus of Sheridan College Institute of Technology in Brampton since 2006. This pilot project has led to the expansion of Algoma University's Brampton programs.
"We're very excited to be expanding our presence in the community," says Dr. Celia Ross, President of Algoma University. "With our outcome-driven, degree options designed for the motivated adult learner, we offer compelling choices for anyone who wants to enhance their career options quickly."
Designed for students who already hold a university degree or college diploma, Algoma University at Brampton offers specialized degree programs allowing students to graduate quickly. Completion times for these degrees range from 11 to 20 months, depending upon the program and the student's entrance qualifications. Currently Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degrees are offered, with a Bachelor of Business Administration program scheduled to be introduced in September 2010.
The grand opening of Algoma University's Brampton centre of operations, scheduled for November 26th is expected to attract a mix of prospective, current and former students, Sheridan College officials and civic leaders. Senior university officials will be on hand.
"City of Brampton Council has a vision to help create a variety of training and skills development choices for its residents. Algoma University's presence in Brampton is an excellent complement to the many outstanding programs provided by the Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning and other institutes in this growing market," says Brampton's City Manager Deborah Dubenofsky.
