Career Profile: Business Services Clerk

How long have you been working as a Business Services Clerk?

I’ve been working as a Business Services Clerk for the Public Works division for 6 years.

What does your job entail?

My job includes a variety of tasks from answering phone calls and processing payments for permits and other fees, to researching, coding and filing documents in our central file room. I code and file documents pertaining to major road construction projects, snow clearing operations, traffic services, service requests and those of a general nature relating to the operation of this division. Since our division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the roadways and associated infrastructure in a growing City, the calls from residents vary each day, which makes my job very interesting.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy the variety in my daily work. I like administrative work and the customer service aspect as well. It’s rewarding helping people.

What are some of the challenges about your job?

Due to the large range of scenarios residents call about, it’s a little challenging to determine who to direct the inquiry/concern to. However, there are many resources available to help.  An increase in the number of phone calls during busy seasons (ie. snow events or major construction projects) makes for a hectic day, but knowing that we’re doing what we can to help the residents is satisfying.

Describe important traits for your position.

Being a team player and the ability to multi-task are very helpful.

What other duties are you responsible for?

Periodically I am asked to help train new staff joining our section. I enjoy sharing my experiences and helping others learn about this division, records management and how we help the residents in our community.
