City receives international award for open data platform

BRAMPTON, ON - The City of Brampton has once again been recognized for its innovative open data platform, the Brampton GeoHub. Esri Inc., a global leader in Geographical Information Services (GIS) has awarded the City with the 2018 Esri Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award for demonstrating groundbreaking and transformative possibilities of GIS software.

As one of two Canadian award-winners, the City was chosen from over 300,000 eligible candidates for its effective enterprise implementation of GIS technology to deliver better services.
The Brampton GeoHub is an open data platform and collaborative technology that makes it easier for people to access public information. It is home to maps, apps, stories and datasets that highlight what’s happening in the city, such as:

The City Dashboard: monitor the City’s municipal service performance and community measures.
Brampton 2040 Vision Overview: the City asked people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences to share their bright ideas for Brampton’s brilliant future. Learn about the results here.
Parks and Rec Locator: new to Brampton, or simply looking to explore amenities you may not have visited before? Residents can locate parks, schools and recreation facilities in their neighborhood.
Roadworks Viewer: View construction projects and road closures in Brampton to help plan your commute and relieve traffic congestion in the City.

Esri is a global company that provides world-class enterprise GIS solutions that empower businesses, governments and educational institutions to make timely, informed and mission-critical decisions by leveraging the power of geography. The SAG Awards are meant to show appreciation for organizations that are using GIS to solve some of the world's toughest challenges.

This is not the first time the City has been recognized for its efforts in open data, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to thinking bigger.  As a tool that enables enhanced two-way data sharing and communication, the GeoHub continues to increase transparency and foster innovation, and allows residents a better understanding of their community and its surroundings.
