BRAMPTON, ON – With warm weather upon us, the City wants to ensure that residents maintain their neighbourhoods.
Be a good neighbor. Prevent unsightly and hazardous conditions by looking after your property.
Here are a few tips on how to keep it in tiptop shape this spring and summer:
Trees and hedges on your property should be trimmed to avoid overgrowth that could affect safety and prevent people from walking on the sidewalk.
The Tree Preservation By-law protects trees on private property. Before you remove a tree from your property, or if you have a concern about a tree on City property such as on a boulevard or in a park, contact Parks Maintenance and Forestry by calling 311.
Grass and Weeds
Long grass is unsightly and can attract rodents. Keep your grass cut to 20 cm (8 inches) or shorter. If you don’t, the City may issue an Order to Comply ordering you to cut your long grass and weeds. The City will re-inspect and if the grass and/or weeds are still not cut, will arrange for a contractor to cut them, charging the cost to the property owner. This cost, plus an administrative fee, will be added directly to an owner’s property taxes.
To combat weeds without pesticides, cut your lawn more often to reduce the ability of weeds to spread seeds, increase fertilizing and aerating, cover your garden and shrub areas with mulch and remove weeds by hand when necessary.
Water often accumulates in children’s toys and wading pools, buckets, tires and on top of pool covers. This is called stagnant water, and it should be removed from your property. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitos and is often a safety hazard.
The boulevard is the part of residential property that is closest to the road. While this land is owned by the City, as per the Boulevard Maintenance By-law, it is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain it. This includes but is not limited to:
• Cutting grass
• Keeping clear of garbage, debris, animal waste and trip hazards
Storing damaged or partially working items or debris on your property not only impacts the appearance of your property and neighbourhood, but can be a health and safety hazard. Do not store vehicle parts, discarded furniture and appliances, construction materials, animal waste or other debris on your property.
If your property is not clear of debris, the City may issue an Order to Comply requiring it be removed. The City will re-inspect and if the order has not been complied with, may arrange for a contractor to remove the debris, charging the cost to the property owner as per the Minimum Maintenance (Property Standards) By-law and Refuse and Dumping By-law. This cost, plus an administrative fee, will be added directly to an owner’s property taxes.
