International Friendship Garden
The International Friendship Garden celebrates the City of Brampton’s global partnerships and agreements with cities around the world. It also features a plaque to celebrate Brampton’s original Sister City agreement with Miami Beach, Florida.
The garden was unveiled on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 and is located in D.M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park, 9050 Bramalea Road. It is southeast of the greenhouse area, facing Queen Street.
Modelled after the Miami Beach Sister Cities Friendship Garden, the design of Brampton’s International Friendship Garden prominently features a dove icon – a significant piece of the City of Brampton’s logo. (Find the dove at the base of the rose bud in the City’s logo.)
A friendship city relationship is a partnership between two cities to deepen the friendly exchanges between governments and people of the two cities. These two cities will, on the principle of equality and mutual benefit and on the basis of previous friendly exchanges, conduct further friendly exchange in a broader range of fields and facilitate the achievement of fruitful results in cooperation areas of economy and trade, technology, culture, education, sports, public health, etc. The Friendship Cities Program is a way for the City to initiate relationships — on a municipal government to municipal government basis — with international cities on a less formal basis than through an official sister city relationship.
A sister city relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries. A sister city, county, or state relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official from both communities sign off on an agreement.
A city may have any number of sister cities, with community involvement ranging from a half dozen to hundreds of volunteers. In addition to volunteers, sister city organizations may include representatives from non-profits, municipal governments, the private sector, and other civic organizations.
Sister city relationships offer the flexibility to form connections between communities that are mutually beneficial and which address issues that are most relevant for partners.
